In a double-blind, randomised trial, the drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol contraceptive pill given in a 24/4 regimen (marketed as Yaz in Australia), almost halved the number of acne lesions among over 200 healthy females with moderate acne after six cycles.

Women taking the OCP were three times as likely to have ‘clear’ or ‘almost clear’ skin as those taking the placebo, with these anti-acne effects apparent by the third cycle of the treatment, the manufacturer-sponsored study found.

In addition the new combined OCP formulation was shown to be well-tolerated with a good safety profile.

The US researchers links much of the anti-acne effectiveness of this OCP to the anti-androgenic properties of the progestin, drospirenone as well as the 24/4 regimen allowing for prolonged exposure to the hormone.
