There is a common misconception that UV rays from the sun or a tanning booth can effectively treat acne. Acne is an inflammatory condition of the skin that occurs when the pores become clogged. Our skin is constantly shedding dead cells to make way for new ones. The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that is designed to empty healthy bacteria onto the skin’s surface through the opening of the pore – this is also how we shed our skin cells. In a person suffering from acne, their body does not shed skin cells properly because that oil is trapped below the surface causing a “plug” made of oil, hair and skin. The plug makes it very difficult for your body to shed the dead skin cells so they end up staying “plugged” below the skin where the mixture of sebum, hair and skin cells will eventually overflow into the nearby skin, leading to a pimple of some sort.

Let’s face it..for kids..acne is a big deal. It’s not a major medical problem but if you’re 13 or 14 or 18…it sure feels like it. Medical experts say acne can be really tough for some kids to deal with and can even lead to depression.

Causes

Hormonal changes during early pregnancy often result in acne inflammations. Even if you have been blessed with clear skin all your life, you may experience terrible acne during your first trimester. While pregnant, the skin can also dry out more than normal so drying treatments such as benzoyl peroxide cream or gel may be too harsh. • Comedones are known as blackheads and whiteheads, depending on whether the pore is open or not.
